PayPal, the online payments giant, will now accept credit card payments for vendors without requiring customers to open an account.
The new ‘Guest Payments’ system will allow e-commerce operators and web developers to process credit card payments without forcing their customers to set up a PayPal account, and instead will process them directly.
Customers will be able to collect financial data, including credit card numbers, through their website and the payment will be billed through PayPal, rather than directing their customers to the PayPal site to sign in and make their purchase.
A PayPal spokesperson said: “Guest Payments allows developers to collect credit card payments without requiring their customers to open a PayPal account, eliminating the complications merchants, developers and startups face in accepting credit cards”
The news from PayPal comes shortly after credit card giants Visa and Mastercard announced that they would be moving into the online payments sector and set up payment systems to rival PayPal. By opening up their credit card system PayPal have shown their intentions to appeal to a wider ranging market.
Visa has just announced a new system in Australia called ‘PayClick’ and is based on a pre-charge, non-credit service. Analysts have speculated that this is a pilot programme that will rolled out worldwide in coming months.
